October, 2003 (The Black Hills, South Dakota) -- Pronghorn Antelope bucks are fascinating creatures, especially in the Fall of the year, when the rut is in full swing. Territorial and possessive, these guys are constantly "riding herd" on their harems, though they can move when they need to. They are, in fact, one of the fastest mammals around, achieving speeds of over 40 mph, which is pretty decent, considering they're antelope.

Tech Notes: When it comes to wildlife photography, I use my Nikon D1H for many reasons, including it's 5-exposures-per-second capability and the 40-image buffer. Because antelope live in open grasslands, it's definitely a larger-lens situation, and in this case, I went with the AF VR-Nikkor 80-400 1:4.5-5.6D. Of course, because of the distance and the wind, a tripod is mandatory, as is a glass of wine.
