I've been a Minnesota photographer all my life. (I started with a cheap Ricoh SLR, and graduated to the 'high-tech' Pentax Spotmatic in the early 70s.) This part of Northern Minnesota has always been one of my favorite subjects. Any time. Any season. I know of no country with as much wildlife, plant diversity, seasonal variation, and general accessibility. There is always SO MUCH to shoot that it's easy to become jaded and miss the multitude of microcosms that are the North Woods. Did I say I love this area?

Tech Notes: Well, from the gear standpoint, whatever you have works. You can let your bag dictate what you'll shoot, or you can bring everything you have and be totally unlimited. (But that's just the way it goes, isn't it?) I try to come prepared. My main body on this trip was the D2H, and I shot a lot with a 12-24 DX and a 24-85. I wasn't shooting wildlife, so it was mostly shorter lenses. And, of course, circular polarizers and warming filters are mandatory in the fall for proper color saturation. But it's all good here.
