Vancouver, British Columbia, on a late, warm September night. You kind of had to be there... (Pixel dimensions: 1100 x 729, file size: 180 K)
Although I've had guesses ranging from White Sands to Dubai, this shot is from South Padre Island. If you drive north up the island, you'll soon reach this sign. Which is your cue to head out to the water and drive on the beach from that point. (Pixel dimensions: 1100 x 729, file size: 104 K)
I was driving up to the lake from Minneapolis and passed this scene on what the locals call "the old Scenic Highway." (Pixel dimensions: 1100 x 728, file size: 186 K)
The Snake River, right after sunrise. I'm sure the Canadian geese are obvious, but can you see the moose calf? (Pixel dimensions: 1100 x 728, file size: 263 K)
This wonderful image is not a postcard, but a photo of a mural on a building wall in South Austin (78704). The creators' names are in the upper right corner. (Pixel dimensions: 1200 x 738, file size: 284 K)
Texas wildflowers grow year around. No matter what the season, something is in bloom. One of my favorites is the Firewheel Indian Blanket (Gaillardia pulchella), shown here in a field with a burst of summer Coreopsis basalis. (Pixel dimensions: 1200 x 795, file size: 241 K)
The chick riding on the back of this mother loon is 6-days old. The whole time I watched this family, the two chicks never switched places. What's up with that? Well, I think I know, but better not go there. (Pixel dimensions: 1000 x 556, file size: 184 K)
Every outdoor landscape photographer has spent long hours staring at the photographs of Ansel Adams, including many of his captivating perspectives of Half Dome, one of the dominant features of the Yosemite Valley. This particular shot was taken at sunset in early March. (Pixel dimensions: 1200 x 795, file size: 1.1 M)
South Padre Island ranks as one of my fave places in the USA. This place has everything you want in a beach community. And, in the winter, it is quiet, sparsely populated, and the weather is wonderful. Although The Island has grown substantially in the five decades I've visited there, it continues to retain it's charm and and uniqueness. I could live on this beach, and have. (Pixel dimensions: 1200 x 675, file size: 148 K)
I keeping taking the same photograph of the South Padre beach over and over again. Decade after decade, I keep taking the same shot, each time thinking 'this is a view I want to capture, remember and recall.' I'm sure it means something... (Pixel dimensions: 1200 x 787, file size: 216 K)
The American Bison bull is a formidable creature indeed, one minute peaceful and the next on the move, tending his herd and eyeing intruders. One of the national park sites has a video showing a bison bull throwing a tourist into a tree. They've also been knowing to 'customize' SUVs that have infringed on their comfort zones. Any way you cut it, this guy deserves (hit it, Aretha) R-E-S-P-E-C-T. (Pixel dimensions: 1100 x 903, file size: 172 K)
This is a Pronghorn Antelope running free on the golden grasslands of the Black Hills during the peak of the Fall season with rutting activity in full swing, if you know what I'm saying. These graceful creatures spend much of this season tending their harems and taking care of business. This is a nice buck in a characteristic setting, wondering what in the world that tall dude with a Nikon thinks he's doing out here... (Pixel dimensions: 1100 x 775, file size: 152 K)
There's something about the way a mountain goat moves that makes it seem like life's projector is just a little out of whack. These beautiful white animals glide from height to rocky height as they act out their effortlesss denial of gravity. It's probably safe to say that they're not as rowdy as their sheep neighbors and not as camera-shy, either. So, they like to climb, they're relatively quiet, and they're publicity hounds. Does any of this sound familiar? (Pixel dimensions: 1200 x 867, file size: 232 K)
The beautiful and elusive Minnesota grouse is seen mostly in the Fall of the year in the northern regions of these United States, when the leaves are falling and preparations for the upcoming winter are in full swing. They are usually very hard to approach, but will occassionally suffer serious lapses of attention, which can make them seem, well, humorous. In the wooded counties of upper Minnesota, it is said that the population varies according to a regular cycle, some say seven years, some nine. The severity of the winters and the density of predators can also have a direct effect on their numbers. Even in the best of years, they are not often seen. Now, here's a question for those of you who have spent far-too-much time in pursuit of these wily creatures: is this bird, in fact, a Ruffed Grouse or a Spruce Grouse? (Pixel dimensions: 1200 x 838, file size: 228 K)
A lot of folks think Bighorn rams spend the majority of their time on the steep cliffs and rocky crags, but the fact is they're are much a woodland creature as the rest of us. I like this darkish but natural shot of an undisturbed ram making his way on down the path through the pines. (Pixel dimensions: 1200 x 899, file size: 268 K)
Ewe and curious are redundant. And the blended background colors in this shot make it one of my desktop faves. Have you noticed how much more neat the ewes are than the jocks? What's up with that? (Pixel dimensions: 1200 x 873, file size: 208 K)
You have got to admit it, this is a mighty cool shot. The lamb is practically standing on its head and hey, how about those Fall colors? Wait, there's more... Makes a great desktop image! Price is right. (Pixel dimensions: 1200 x 869, file size: 272 K)
Needless to say, this guy was very close to me, within 3 feet. And he hung in there with me for 15-20 minutes, so I managed to get some detailed closeups of this great face. (Pixel dimensions: 1200 x 1057, file size: 272 K)
