October, 2002 (Northern Maine, USA) -- Okay, first thing to remember, northern Maine during the first week of October can range from quite chilly to real cold. Millinocket is a great little town and the people are very friendly, although they view what they call "leaf peepers" with some disdain. About an hour to the north is Baxter State Park, the home of Mt. Katdadin, the start (or end) of the Appalachian Trail. And if you are inclined to spend your days in a swamp, you will encounter the wily North American moose, a gentle and often comical creature who doesn't really give a flip how many photographers are clicking away at it. The stands of maple are spectacular, people are few, and when a moose walks up to you, you WILL pay attention!

Gearhead Notes: For most of these images, I relied on my trusty Nikon D1H digital camera and an AF-S Nikkor 300mm 1:4D lens. Hey, it's a hike back to these swamps, so one doesn't really take much extra weight other than a tripod and lunch. There's really nothing quite like standing around in a swamp enjoying a tasty luncheon...
