July, 2004 (Owen Lake, Minnesota) -- Yes, it's time again for the seasonal trek to the North Woods, to the family stomping grounds, when the weather is warm and the water is still chilly and the bugs are tolerable. This year's trip offered the opportunity, thanks to Richard and Karen and their cool pontoon boat, to photograph a mother loon with her 6-day-old chicks. As you may or may not know, baby loons ride on their mother's back when they are young, as shown in the photographs below. Loons mate for life (that's a shot of Dad Loon below flapping his wings) and they tend to nest on the same lake year after year. I know the residents of Owen Lake are very protective of their baby loons, especially with the eagle population on the rise, and they closely monitor their safety and progress. I certainly hope to see these little guys when I return in the fall.

Tech Notes: You know, I pretty much use my Nikon D2H for everything these days, it's just an amazing camera in so many ways. I carried a minimal number of lenses on this trip, and I used my Nikon 80-200 2.8 for the loon shots. It's huge, but it never fails to bring home the proverbial bacon. Everything else was either my newish 12-24 DX or my standard 24-85, both Nikon G-type lenses. Other than a circular polarizer or a warming filter, and my smaller and more portable Gitzo 1228, I concentrated more on keeping the mosquitos away than on messing with peripherals. I think that's a trend in my personal workflow. But it could change...
