Here's some powerful music for acoustic true believers:
It's I Wrote My Name On You, Lonnie Knight's new CD. I am very familiar with all of Lonnie's albums going back to the early 70s, and I mean it when I
say the guy doesn't make anything but good records. But I Wrote My Name On You appeals to me in a very different way. Granted, there's no one in this
country doing what he does with the acoustic guitar, everyone knows that, but maybe it's the guts and confidence of these very personal songs done in such an up-close way that gets to me. I won't give away the story behind "I Still Say Hi," but this song is almost more than I can listen to in a casual way. And he does terrific updates of a couple of his older songs, "There Is a Dog in Rockford" and "Somebody's Crying Mercy," two of my faves. (I used to do a cover of "Mercy" myself.) And for you spooky, late night people, his "Burn This House Down" is your new anthem. In addition, Lon usually does a well-selected cover or two on his recordings, and this CD includes cool versions of a Mark Knopfler and a Dave Van Ronk tune, but my fave is his dramatic rendition of Leslie Ball's "Patch of Blue," a line from which is the source of the album's title. Trust me on this one, folks, this is a CD worth buying. Four stars on this baby. You can get it from Lonnie's web site, and you'll thank me for this recommendation. |

What better place to start than Lonnie Knight's new CD, Better Days? I'm still amazed by the fact that Lonnie cut this entire album straight up, that is, without a single overdub. You know who cuts whole albums singing and playing simultaneously these days? Nobody I know. 14 great songs here, including "The Blake Road Incident" and "1300 Miles," two tracks that will make you want to replay them instantly. There's also a great version of my song "Home." I've admired Lonnie's work since we met in the Sixties. He's an intelligent songwriter in the best sense of that expression, a singer with a distinct style, and one of our great American guitarists. You owe it to yourself to pick up a copy of this first class CD, and you can do that on his website, lonnieknight.com. |

I am really proud of this album by my partner and friend, Chip Martin of Wimberly, Texas. First off, let me say that I produced this CD, with the able assistance of Chet Himes (engineer), Roscoe Beck (bass), and Tommy Taylor (drums) and the proverbial cast of dozens. But all the kudos really go to Chip, who put a lot of thought and energy into this project. He not only wrote all of the songs, he sang and played all the parts and engineered that portion of the recording in his own studio. The results are impressive and, I must say, probably not like anything you've heard before. My personal fave is "Animal Attraction," but more about that later. Some folks call Body Language "progressive rock." I don't know about labels, but I do think this is a very solid, very entertaining, very unique piece of work and I expect it to do well. From the Five, the new album by my good friend Stephen Bruton, is finally out, and I have to say, I love this album! I've listened to it a lot over the past months, and it contains a track that is more than just a favorite song, it has taken on a role in my life. It's called "Faded Man," and this is the kind of music that very much matters to me. Stephen Bruton is a very respected and influential guy in these parts of the world, and I sincerely hope the rest of the universe gets hip to him very soon. If you like great guitar playing, superior production, real singing, and masterful songwriting, you really ought to pick up this CD without delay. For more info on how to buy it, check out Stephen's recently-renovated web site. |
