August, 2004 (The Pedernales River in Pedernales Falls State Park, Texas) -- Pedernales Falls State Park covers 5212 acres of Blanco County east of Johnson City. It was acquired from private owners in 1970 and was opened to the public in 1971. This area, formerly the Circle Bar Ranch, is typical of the Edwards Plateau terrain. In July, the average high is 94. And the humidity can be in that range also, but the river is clean and the water is warm, so it kind of all works out.

Tech Notes: Walking down to the river in the heat requires minimizing the cartage factor, so I usually don't even take a tripod, which is cool because I'm not really doing anything telephoto anyway. On these trips, I just carried the omnipresent 24-85 and my DX 12-24, both Nikon G lenses. And a couple of circular polarizers. And water. And my fave chigger antidote, Chigarid, which is, for me, mandatory.
